Review: The Kiss of Deception (The Remnant Chronicles #1) by Mary E. Pearson

SUMMARY FROM GOODREADS:
A princess must find her place in a reborn world.
She flees on her wedding day.
She steals ancient documents from the Chancellor's secret collection.
She is pursued by bounty hunters sent by her own father.
She is Princess Lia, seventeen, First Daughter of the House of Morrighan.
The Kingdom of Morrighan is steeped in tradition and the stories of a bygone world, but some traditions Lia can't abide. Like having to marry someone she's never met to secure a political alliance.
Fed up and ready for a new life, Lia flees to a distant village on the morning of her wedding. She settles in among the common folk, intrigued when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Deceptions swirl and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secrets—secrets that may unravel her world—even as she feels herself falling in love.

MY TAKE:
While this book had its flaws, it was pretty much exactly what I was looking for at the time, so I enjoyed it immensely.

In The Kiss of Deception, Princess Lia runs away so that she won't be forced to marry a man she doesn't know, to ensure an alliance between their two kingdoms. As she settles into her new life, she meets two strange young men who are harboring their own secrets.

To be honest, during the first few chapters or so, I wasn't really feeling it. I was all set to be disappointed, but things started looking up when Lia starts her new life, and the guys enter the story. By then, I was able to better grasp the information and connections between the kingdoms and the stories in the book.

As the book progressed, I was more and more intrigued, and I even teared up near the end. The ending itself had me smiling too. I actually swore when I turned the page and realized that that was the end of the story. I'm kinda reluctant to read the next book, though. The ending was nice, and I'm actually worried that I won't like what happens next.

As I expected and hoped for, this book has a love triangle. While the book is told mostly from Lia's point-of-view, occasionally, the point-of-view switches to one of the guys. It's kind of funny because I had assumed things about the boys and when the big reveal came, I thought "I knew something was up!".

At first, I was on the fence about which of the guys to root for, but eventually I started favoring Rafe. I was surprised at myself, actually, because I came into this thinking I would like Kaden more. However, as cheesy as he could be sometimes, I really did prefer Rafe more.

As for Lia, I liked her a lot, especially when she was being sassy. She had a good number of funny and biting lines that had me cheering for her. I really want to see how things work out for her in the next book.

THE GOOD:

  1. Lia doesn't take kindly to being disrespected.
  2. There were some nice plot twists.
  3. The series shows promise.

THE BAD:

  1. The love stories can get cheesy at times.

FAVORITE QUOTE/S:
“I see only reminders that nothing lasts forever, not even greatness.”
“Some things last.”
I faced him. “Really? And just what would that be?”
“The things that matter.”
READ IT IF:

  1. You like strong heroines.
  2. You like stories starring princesses.
  3. You like love triangles.
