Review: Reached (Matched #3) by Ally Condie

SUMMARY FROM GOODREADS:
After leaving Society to desperately seek The Rising, and each other, Cassia and Ky have found what they were looking for, but at the cost of losing each other yet again. Cassia is assigned undercover in Central city, Ky outside the borders, an airship pilot with Indie. Xander is a medic, with a secret. All too soon, everything shifts again.
MY TAKE:
It's funny how despising characters can ruin even the good things about a book.

In Reached, the Rising has taken over Society, but a Plague threatens to lay waste to the population. It's now a race against time to find the cure.

I liked that we learn a lot more about the Rising and the Society here. It's nice to see more about the different Provinces and the other characters in the book. There were so many little clever things about this world that didn't get enough emphasis or importance. Why? Because of Cassia and Ky.

I still held out hope that Cassia would become something more, someone real and unselfish. She never did, though. She was, to me, a lot like Bella Swan in Breaking Dawn: the girl who hurt a great guy, and who had abilities that were so integral to the cure and Society. Whenever it was Cassia's turn to be the focus of the story, I skipped over every single mention of Ky and her feelings for him. By now, it just feels corny and trite. I did the same thing with Ky's chapters.

I really feel like Xander got the short end of the stick here. He gave up a lot of things and he did very noble things, and yet Cassia treated him poorly, AND Xander still stuck around even when all Cassia did was ask for more, more, more. It really boggles my mind why these two guys were fighting over a girl like her. At least, Xander got his happy ending. I was satisfied with that, especially since he ended up with someone who was practically the opposite of Cassia.

THE GOOD:

  1. Xander got his happy ending.
  2. There's a little more dystopian elements in this one.
  3. The Rising and Society conflict has merits.

THE BAD:

  1. If you didn't like Cassia before, I doubt you're going to like her any more now.

FAVORITE QUOTE/S:
Words mean what you want them to mean.
READ IT IF:

  1. You liked Matched and Crossed.
  2. You're team Xander.
  3. You want to know what happens next in their Society.
