Review: The Blood of Olympus (The Heroes of Olympus #5) by Rick Riordan

SUMMARY FROM GOODREADS:
Though the Greek and Roman crewmembers of the Argo II have made progress in their many quests, they still seem no closer to defeating the earth mother, Gaea. Her giants have risen—all of them—and they're stronger than ever. They must be stopped before the Feast of Spes, when Gaea plans to have two demigods sacrificed in Athens. She needs their blood—the blood of Olympus—in order to wake.
The demigods are having more frequent visions of a terrible battle at Camp Half-Blood. The Roman legion from Camp Jupiter, led by Octavian, is almost within striking distance. Though it is tempting to take the Athena Parthenos to Athens to use as a secret weapon, the friends know that the huge statue belongs back on Long Island, where it "might" be able to stop a war between the two camps.
The Athena Parthenos will go west; the Argo II will go east. The gods, still suffering from multiple personality disorder, are useless. How can a handful of young demigods hope to persevere against Gaea's army of powerful giants? As dangerous as it is to head to Athens, they have no other option. They have sacrificed too much already. And if Gaea wakes, it is game over.

MY TAKE:
This book is the perfect end to the series.

In Blood of Olympus, everything comes to a head as the Greek and Roman demigods face off, and the remaining crew of the Argo II complete their mission before Gaia rises.

This book has everything I love about the Percy Jackson and the Olympians and the Heroes of Olympus series. There's humor, action, romance, wisdom, and great characterization.

I usually just smirk or smile when I come across jokes or funny lines in books, but while reading The Blood of Olympus, I really laughed out loud so many times. Most of the laughs came when Leo was the focus of the story. That guy makes some very funny observations.

Action-wise, as you would expect, this book is jam-packed with fights and battle scenes. I liked how everything was fast-paced and a lot of winning moves were unexpected. This would make for a great movie, but given how the Percy Jackson movies didn't do as well as some book adaptations, I don't think this will get made,

The characters have grown so much over the series. Really, the only character that irritated the crap out of me was Octavian. That guy is insane. As much as I will always enjoy Annabeth and Percy's adventures, some of my favorite moment in this book belonged to Reyna. It's been a long while since I read the first three books in the series, so I don't really remember my initial impression of Reyna. However, after this book, I can say that I am extremely impressed with Reyna. She's strong, and I would be happy to learn more about what happens to her after this series. I am also pretty happy with Nico's ending too. His love interest seems like a total opposite, but if he's more complementary than an actual opposite, this could be a long-term thing for them.

THE GOOD:

  1. It's a perfect finale.
  2. There are plenty of really funny moments.
  3. It's really easy to care about the characters.

THE BAD:

  1. The series is done.

FAVORITE QUOTE/S:
No one can hate you with more intensity than someone who used to love you.
READ IT IF:

  1. You are a fan of mythology.
  2. You loved the rest of the series.
  3. You like funny novels.
