Review: Cookie, the Walker by Chris Monroe

SUMMARY FROM NETGALLEY.COM:

Cookie the dog doesn't walk like other dogs. She walks on her hind legs, and what a sight that is! Cookie's walking catches the attention of a show producer, who turns her into a star. And with fame comes benefits: bacon, candy, a fanny pack, her own mini-fridge…
But the more Cookie walks, the more people expect from her. Cookie's old friend Kevin keeps reminding her about how great her regular life used to be. And Cookie's legs are getting tired. Will Cookie keep walking for fame and fortune? Or will she stand down and get her life back?

MY TAKE:
If ever there was a children's book that celebrities could relate to, this is probably it.

In Cookie, the Walker, Cookie is a walking dog who finds that her walking ability has attracted fans and made her famous. However, her fame also means that she's tired and homesick.

The first thing I noticed when I started reading was how the characters' dialogues were placed in speech bubbles so it looked like you were reading a comic book. Some of the pages' layouts were actually in panels, just like in a comic book.

As for the plot, Cookie's road to fame reminds me a lot of how some celebrities made it big. They have something special and they go from playing at small venues to being Hollywood stars. Cookie also experiences the non-stop scheduling and tiredness that stars have.

I liked the coloring of the illustrations, but I wasn't too fond of the drawing style used. It reminds me a little bit of the older Nickelodeon channel cartoons in the '90s.

Thanks to NetGalley and Carolrhoda Books for the e-ARC. Publication date of Cookie, the Walker is on March 1, 2013.

THE GOOD:

  1. It's pretty true to celebrities' stories.
  2. Kids might like the idea of a walking, talking dog.
  3. It's an entertaining story.

THE BAD:

  1. The illustration style might not appeal to everyone.

FAVORITE QUOTE/S:
Although she did like fanny packs and mini-fridges... she felt unsure.
READ IT IF:

  1. Your child likes dogs.
  2. Your child is more comfortable with comic books than regular books.
  3. You or your child are fascinated by celebrities.
