Review: Carrot by Vanita Oelschlager

SUMMARY FROM NETGALLEY.COM:
A playful and rhythmic page-turner, Carrot the Cat learns that to like who you are is right where it's at. Carrot is a delightful story about a common house cat who finds that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence.
MY TAKE:

This is such a cute book!

Carrot the Cat has a really nice life. She lives in a nice house and she gets to eat good food. However, one day, she sees a pretty cat that has the life she's always dreamed of, and this makes her think, what if she could have that cat's life.

I thought the story was nice. It's a little longer than what I'm used to when it comes to children's books, however, it works since it lets us know more about Carrot. The idea of not comparing yourself to others has been around forever, but this is a good way to introduce the idea to kids.

The illustration style is actually quite nice. There's a white outline around the drawings that make them look like papier tole, almost. I'm not sure what medium was used for coloring, but I prefer that the color would have been either softer, ala watercolors, or bolder, ala poster paint.

Thanks to NetGalley and VanitaBooks for the e-copy.

THE GOOD:

  1. The story is a nice way of presenting an age-old lesson.
  2. The effect of the illustrations are nice.
  3. The story works despite being long.

THE BAD:

  1. The coloring might have been better.

FAVORITE QUOTE/S:

Carrot would have a collar
of diamonds and pearls.
She would have tea every day
at three with the girls.

READ IT IF:

  1. You like stories about cats.
  2. You like imaginative pictures.
  3. You like stories that have a message.
